Rotary Clubs welcome teenagers aged 15 to 19 from around 100 countries.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Youth Exchange
The primary goal of Youth Exchange is to provide young people with the opportunity to experience a new culture and become leaders who promote peace and justice around the world. To achieve this, everyone involved in an exchange, including youth and volunteers, must be open-minded, tolerant, and supportive of one another.
What is the Rotary Youth Exchange?
Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace one young person at a time. Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students ages 15-19 are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.
Rotary Clubs channel their commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service. Youth Service, recognizes the importance of empowering youth through leadership development programs. Rotary Youth Exchange is one of many youth leadership development programs offered by Rotary.
Rotary International Youth Exchange program brings the ideal of world citizenship to life. Each year, this program gives thousands of young people the opportunity to experience life in other cultures. Living in a foreign country is a powerful way to gain global understanding and promote peace. Through Youth Exchange, students learn a new language, discover different cultures and customs, and make friendships that last a lifetime.
Objectives of RYE:
Instilling international understanding and goodwill in students
Creating positive change by empowering youth
Making lasting connections for host clubs, host families, communities, and the students involved.
Rotary districts administer the Youth Exchange program in collaboration with local Rotary clubs. Rotary’s youth protection policies and district Youth Exchange certification program ensure that the safety of our youth is the highest priority.
Types of Exchanges:
Exchanges are typically open to students ages 15 to 19, but Rotary districts determine the exact age range. Flexibility in the Youth Exchange program allows it to be adapted to fit the needs of any student who qualifies.
Long Term Exchanges Program (LTEP)
Usually lasts for one academic year during which the student lives with multiple families in the host country and is required to attend school.
Short Term Exchanges Program (STEP)
From about a few days to several months, often takes place when school is not in session, however this varies widely among districts. Participants typically stay with a local family in the host country. They often involve organized trips or home stays during school holidays.
International Youth Camps
Open for students from age 18 to 22 for students from across the world. Organised by Rotary district for around 10 to 15 days. No Exchange.
Youth Exchange is administered locally. So approval of your Club President & District 3170 RYE Committee is mandatory.
When the basic application (we will provide a word document to be filled and submitted) is completed and submitted, inform your Rotary Club President to schedule an interview, at least one parent/guardian must attend the interview along with the candidate. If you pass that step, your club President will write to the RYE District Chair to consider the application, then parent/guardian will continue the application process by completing another detailed application (that will be provided) and submit all of the other required forms and documents. If you are chosen by your Club, the candidate will then go through the district interview process in December.
What is the Eligibility Criteria?
Age: 15–19 years (high school graduates are eligible).
What are the timelines?
The Rotary Youth Exchange program is highly selective, so start planning as soon as possible. For long-term exchanges (LTEP), apply in August/September for exchanges beginning the following (next year) August. International exchanges typically begin during the summer;
For example, if you wish to travel when you’re in 11th grade, you should apply in August/September of your 10th-grade year or even even earlier. The reason for the early deadlines? is Rotary clubs and district has an extensive selection and orientation process, which helps us identify the best candidates and prepare you well for your time as Youth Exchange students.
What about the Travel, Visa, Health & Dental Insurance Arrangements?
Travel (Return Tickets), Visa, Health & Dental Insurance arrangements are the responsibility of participating families and should ideally be managed through a travel agency & Internationally recognized Insurance Company & (through an approved Rotary provider) for ease and reliability.
